STAFF DEVELOPER & SPEAKER
I’m completely taken by the power of the student voice; creating authentic opportunities for kids to follow their passions and sharing their thinking with the world. My teaching career officially began as a primary-grade looping teacher in a small, rural town in New Hampshire—my time there shaped and fueled my love of kid-thinking literacy, and equity in classrooms. But, even before I arrived in a classroom, I considered myself a seeker of understanding. As a first-generation college student, I often felt I stood between two worlds—home and school. My teaching lens has always been focused on developing opportunities for those who are marginalized and have difficulty accessing meaningful learning. This is why the use of technology means something to me—I see it as a way for all students to see the world, know the world, and develop a deeper understanding of their place in the world.
My work toward a Ph.D. in Literacy at the University of New Hampshire deepened my passion for understanding how children learn to read and write, setting me on a path to become a staff developer and speaker. I love supporting teachers’ literacy work in classrooms and finding ways to use technology to enhance these experiences. I see technology as a powerful tool for student creation, reflection, and understanding. I have experienced this power firsthand, with my daughter Liv, who has spent the last year working on a project called LivBits, an endeavor that highlights her passion for books, technology, and social media. I am humbled by the video messages she shares with the world. It’s been an incredible experience working with Liv and seeing her grow into a responsible digital citizen. My biggest claim to fame might be that I am LivBit’s mum!
I absolutely love to travel and see the world, and I’ve had the good fortune to spend time teaching and learning globally, including work on Fulbright in Japan. My work in other countries has given me a genuine appreciation for differing cultural perspectives on teaching and learning. I know that collaboration with teachers is key to developing effective and innovative teaching practices, and this perspective has helped me in my coaching work with teachers around global connectedness for students, elevating student voice, and using social media platforms to demonstrate the power of a global audience.
Hair Flair Maker – I am the maker of some incredible hair flair for my girls—check out any of my pictures on social media for proof. I’m the go-to mom for all dance hair flair.
Traveler – I love to travel, and I have great taxi kharma—no matter what city I am in, I make friends.
Kid Driven – I’m passionate about my kids’ passions: Quinn loves Legos, Liv loves sharks, and Charlotte loves Gaston from Beauty and the Beast (she claims they will marry someday). I learn so much from my kids and their pursuits.
Disney Obsessed – I am a Disney NUT! I’d go there weekly…maybe daily if I lived closer. My bucket list includes visiting the all of the international Disney Parks.
Reader – I am a reader of many genres—it’s not easy for me to pick a favorite genre, book, or author. If you know me, you know I travel with many books and read A LOT!
