Get the Right People on the Bus! Hiring Effective 1:1 Educators

When your school is ready to move to a 1:1 learning environment – either by providing a device to every student or expecting each student to bring their own – one of the best things you can do is hire staff who are experienced 1:1 educators. Not only do they already know how to manage a technology-rich classroom, but they have tons of ideas for using those devices to transform learning. We want our classrooms to be places where students are empowered,  where they can develop their authentic voice, and share their learning with a global audience. Experienced 1:1 teachers know how to make this happen!

So how do you go about hiring experienced 1:1 educators? First of all, you’ll have to attract the 1:1 educator to your school. Today’s 1:1 educators will research your school, district, and even you! It’s a good idea to Google your school – what are the search results? Who wrote them? It’s a good idea to start with this, so you can go through and see what marketing pieces can be produced to help you attract 1:1 educators.

Next, it’s good to know what 1:1 educators are looking for at a school and in their classroom. 1:1 educators are looking for schools that are technology-rich in student devices. Having had experience in 1:1 classrooms, they expect student laptops, document cameras, projectors and WiFi as the norm. Do educators and students at your school have access to these?

The experienced 1:1 educator is critical to the success of technology-rich schools, especially during the transition to 1:1 classrooms. They bring experience, new ideas, strategies and tools to help empower students and transform learning. If we can both better attract them and support them once they join our districts, we will be well on our way to successful technology-rich learning experiences for all students.
