Ken Pendergrass

EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT

Career Snapshot

For almost 30 years, I have been thinking about how to get people of all ages to become independent musicians and musical thinkers. Whether it was a high school marching band, middle school jazz combo, college men’s chorus, volunteer church choir, or elementary orchestra, my goal has been to encourage individuals to take responsibility for their growth as musicians. Often this has been done with the help of technology; more often with humor and encouragement.

But when do we actually learn how to evaluate, change and grow as musicians on our own? This is a question I strive to answer everyday in my work with parents, teachers and students in the public school.

Interests
  • Playing Bass, guitar, and singing lead vocals for “Rainy Day Recess,” our school’s very own faculty and staff 80s cover band.
  • Singing with the men of the Compline Choir at St. Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle; a Sunday night tradition since 1956, the all volunteer choir chants and sings the office of Compline to an audience of thousands who attend in person or by live media every Sunday night at 9:30 PM.
  • Playing trombone with my son and in local orchestras and bands.
  • Riding my bicycle to work and around the lovely Puget Sound Area.
