This course is designed for educators K-12, who have little or no previous programming experience.

All references and materials are located online.

Time commitment: 3-5 hours (approx.) per module.  18-30 hours (approx) for the complete course.

According to code.org, only 1 in 10 schools in the US is teaching students how to write code. Coding is all around us and can be used to teach problem-solving, logical and computational thinking skills as well as to encourage creativity and communication. Participants in this course will discover the thinking and learning processes that are inherent in coding and as well as explore different resources to help them introduce computer programming into their classrooms. Participants will be asked to work collaboratively to design a coding task that can be implemented in their classrooms. This course is designed for those who have little or no previous programming experience.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Analyze trends and resources to help articulate your own positions on the current debate around the necessity and importance of coding in the classroom;

  • Identify a coding platform that is appropriate for your learning environment;

  • Evaluate the age-appropriateness of physical computing platforms and projects;

  • Understand basic coding language and concepts;

  • Create a simple computer program using the Scratch platform;

  • Create an intermediate computer program using the Scratch platform; and

  • Synthesize course materials to design appropriate opportunities to implement coding within your current educational environment.
