The Strands

Strand 1: Visual Literacy and the Media First Generation

New research shows that children between the ages of 0-8 are engaging with media three times more than our generation. Media plays an important role in the lives of children today.

This strand will focus in on how we can use images and video to engage the media first brain in order to have them engage with the text-based world of our schools.

Participants will walk away with ready to go lesson plans and ideas for how to use images to promote critical thinking and deep understanding of concepts in the classroom.

Strand Outcomes

By the end of this strand’s session you will …

  • Understand that using visuals in learning is based in brain research;
  • Utilize different visual strategies to engage the brain in close-reading of images;
  • Understand the use of Creative Commons images in the classroom and with students; and
  • Combine all your new learning to develop your very own self-paced unit or lesson to use in your classroom.

Strand 2: Helping Students Drive Their Learning: The Self-Paced Approach

Being the sage on the stage can be exhausting. What’s more is that it makes it really hard for us as educators to meet the needs of all our students. This session looks at a new approach to education, one that’s driven by individual learners.

In this strand, educators get to learn how to incorporate elements of learner-paced education into their own classroom, including the necessary metacognitive processes that can make it successful, methods of delivering content and concepts without being in front of the room, and what in the world it looks like to assess students on different timelines.

Explore how you can incorporate learner-paced concepts in your own classroom.

Strand Outcomes

By the end of this strand’s session you will …

  • Understand the importance of metacognition in the self-paced learning process and what it looks like in the classroom;
  • Experience new alternatives to direct instruction to help students understand content on a deeper level;
  • Discuss various assessment opportunities to allow students to utilize their strengths to demonstrate their learning; and
  • Combine all your new learning to develop your very own self-paced unit or lesson to use in your classroom.

Strand 3: YouTube in the Classroom: Teacher as Curator, Creator and Learning Designer

With over 1 billion hits on learning related videos each day, YouTube is where people of all ages go to learn.  Teachers can use video to bringing just-in-time, relevant, engaging content to classrooms. YouTube can bring live experts to the classroom and let students experience places and events across the globe. YouTube’s powerful tools allow teachers to go beyond curation and engage in the creation of curriculum aligned content that supplements teaching and learning in so many ways.Through video we can offer extension, remediation, review and personalized self-paced asynchronous learning opportunities.

Encouraging our students to use video allows them to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways. Join me in harnessing the power of YouTube as a curator and creator of content to meet your students where they are at.

Strand Outcomes

By the end of this strand’s session you will …

  • Create a YouTube Channel for curating, live-streaming, publishing, and sharing;
  • Search for and aggregate age-appropriate content that is aligned to the curriculum;
  • Screencast and publish a tutorial video;
  • Investigate the multitude of genres, types, and styles of videos that students can create;
  • Experience a 45-minute student video creation lesson that can be applied in ANY classroom; and
  • Design an asynchronous video lesson using Edpuzzle.
