How to Connect Your Students to Others Around the World

Show Description

Eduro Learning FB Live 4 / 5 May featuring Kim Cofino

How do you connect your students with others around the world? We are living in a globally connected society, but often our classrooms can be very isolated. – Students are sharing within the four physical walls but not beyond. Communicating, sharing and collaborating with others can be a great way for your students to have an authentic audience for their work. It can also be a way for them to learn about people and places they might never get to see in the physical world. Developing a deeper understanding of the diversity of our world is also possible too. Join us for a discussion about why it’s so important to connect your students. We will be sharing specific strategies you can take to connect your classroom to the world too!

How to Connect Your Students to Others Around the World

Why should you connect globally?

  • build understanding, empathy, and tolerance,
  • learn more about others who may be different,
  • get a real-world global experience, the way businesses today function
  • build skills of collaboration and communication across time zones, cultures and languages
  • explore and ignite curiosity about our world

How can you get started?

Step 1: Start Small

Step 2: Connect Yourself

  • Build your own PLN by sharing your learning;
  • Join an existing teacher network; (there are lots of active groups in Google+)
  • If you’re interested in a specific region, try connecting to international schools in the appropriate city or country; (Kim’s post: The World of International Schools is a great place to start)

Step 3: Connect Your Class

  • Start by window shopping to check out other possible project types, to see what works, to get inspired, and to see other teachers that might be interested in collaborating with you
  • Create a custom collaboration with a teacher who has similar learning goals for their students (Eduro Learning video coming soon about this!)
  • Create an online portal for your class – a space where they can connect with their online partners, share their learning, and see assignments and other relevant resources (Eduro Learning video coming soon about this!)

Most importantly, for all of these options, focus on the learning – what do you want students to know and be able to do – rather than the tool.
