What are MICROCREDENTIALS?

Like mini-degrees or certifications in a specific topic area, Microcredentials are a new professional development model where we take the best teaching practices we use with students and apply them to professional development opportunities for educators.

A microcredential will make your professional development embedded and meaningful. Your learning can be applied to your environment immediately. It will also allow you to focus deeply on the new skill and knowledge you are learning about.

Eduro Learning offers a series of Microcredential Pathways, all designed by teachers, for teachers. Every course within each Microcredential Pathway features:

  • Relevant, curated resources hand-selected by the Eduro mentors;
  • Authentic, hands-on tasks or actions to take your learning from the theoretical to the practical;
  • Private community forums to learn from, and share with other participants, as well as the Eduro mentors and course advisors; and
  • Each pathway features a capstone personal project with the support of an online Eduro Learning mentor or advisor.

MICROCREDENTIALS are the future of Education

The rise of the Internet is not only changing the way we approach learning with students but with educators as well. There is a slow and steady shift happening in education into a new professional development model where we take the best teaching practices we use with students and apply them to professional development opportunities for educators. Below are five reasons why microcredentials are the future of professional development for educators.

Learning alone is not for everyone but self-paced is.

Educators are busy people and learners at heart. Microcredentials allow educators to work at their own pace. Completion of PD hours has always been calculated based on time spent in a PD session. With the Internet those hours do not need to be consecutive. An educator can take 3 days to complete a course or 3 months depending on their other commitments.

Some people like to learn alone, watching videos, reading articles and lesson planning on their own. Others get inspired by being around people and having lively discussions. A good Microcredential program should allow both types of learners to flourish. It is equally important to give those who want a community to learn with and from a place to belong and at the same time enable others to work independently to fulfill their requirements.

Immediate and meaningful integration into classroom practice.

Professional Development models have been broken for a long time. A recent 2015 study called The Mirage found the following:

“Over two years, we looked closely at teacher development in three large school districts and one charter school network. Here’s what we found:

  • School systems are making a massive and laudable investment in teacher improvement—far larger than most people realize.
  • Yet most teachers do not appear to improve substantially from year to year, even though many have not yet mastered critical skills.
  • We found no evidence that any particular kind or amount of professional development consistently helps teachers improve.
  • School systems are failing to help teachers understand how to improve—or even that they have room to improve at all.”

Taking teachers out of the classroom or expecting them to go to a conference on a weekend or over summer then bring that learning back to their classroom does not work. Learning out of context does not aid the application of skills and knowledge. The closer professional learning happens to the practical implementation the more impact it has.

Moving professional development online helps to solve this in a variety of ways. It can remove the obstacle of time (spending 6 hours all in one sitting learning) and space (having to drive somewhere to be with others). More important than removing those obstacles are the benefits of being able to learn something online in a focused session, apply it instantly in your classroom practice plus immediately reflect on the learning with others in an online space. Microcredentials not only allow educators to learn, apply, and reflect in the moment, but they also make the learning meaningful for that specific educator in that specific school and for those specific students. Very rarely are educators required to implement something they learned at a conference or be asked to reflect on their new skill and approach in the classroom. Both are key elements in adult learning.

A deeper, more focused approach to professional development.

Microcredentials make professional development classroom-embedded and meaningful in the classroom immediately. They also enable a teacher to focus deeply on the new skill and knowledge they are learning about. Too often in education educators have a PD session on math this week and reading next week or a PD session on this new approach and that new skill. These types of PD sessions are usually “one-off no-hit wonders” that do not connect back to the classroom. With a microcredential an educator gets a deep, long-term focused approach to learning a new skill or acquiring new knowledge and has the ability to apply that learning or skill acquisition instantly to their classroom practice.

For example, our 1:1 Teacher Microcredential focuses on both the pedagogical approach to teaching in a 1:1 classroom (one Internet-connected device to every student) as well as new skills to try and apply as you learn, thereby creating a deep and focused approach that enables you to apply and reflect on your learning.

Courses that are “stackable” lead to greater learning.

Microcredentials give educators freedom of time, space, and pace. New knowledge and skills gained can instantly be integrated into classroom practice. While allowing for deeper more focused learning, microcredentials are also “stackable” in nature. Each course builds on prior courses and knowledge allowing educators to “level up” their skills. Courses within a microcredential can be taken in any order. As educators finish courses they earn badges for the courses. These course badges lead to larger microcredential badges allowing educators and the schools and districts they work for to see the learning that has occurred and be able to award credit for the learning respectively.

Like students, educators deserve a clear map of what they need to know and be able to do, multiple ways to learn, and options for demonstrating mastery. In most cases, we think progress will be marked with a stackable series of microcredentials. No more random courses for continuing ed credits, just highly relevant job-linked learning.” Getting Smart, 2015

Recognized by schools for own professional learning.

One of the biggest reasons microcredentials are growing in popularity is that schools are starting to recognize the professional learning educators do on their own time. Before the internet a school had a hard time tracking all the time teachers spent outside the classroom learning on their own. With microcredentials, a school organization can easily track an educator’s progress and hours spent learning. Schools and districts have already started partnering with companies like Eduro Learning to oversee the microcredential process and track educator training in specific areas. In a partnership capacity, professional development can be delivered to educators while the school or district can give “credit” to the hours spent learning outside of the classroom on their own time.
